Solar hot water systems are the most popular microgeneration system currently in the domestic sector, partly due to their affordability and ease of installation and maintenance. Panels can be installed to provide space heating, hot water or under floor heating.
The SHW system is considered the most cost effective by tenants, because it can be adapted to complement existing boilers by preheating the hot water needed, reducing energy bills considerably. This energy saving addition to an existing system makes it one of the least expensive ways to reduce viable. In the summer months it can provide all the hot water needed in a domestic situation and in winter about 20% of it.
The payback time is around 8 to 12 years for a flat plate collector, depending on climate and the load profile of the house, which is relatively better compared to other micro-renewable options. This makes it the most successful microgeneration system to penetrate the market as yet. Evacuated tube collectors are more complex and efficient but less popular because of higher initial costs.
